Exploring the World with Pokémon Go: Mariner’s Cove Park
At the hottest part of one of the hottest days of the year in Florida, I visited Mariner’s Cove Park. Good thing there was plenty of shade.
At the front of Mariner’s Cove Park sits a couple greenspaces and spots with shade. A good thing too cause as you can see in the above images it was scorching hot out. Few clouds in the sky and the sun was right overhead. Even nearby Lake Monroe wasn’t cooling things off.
But going deeper into the park did offer some relief from the sun. And based on the signs in the parking lot, there was plenty more to discover back there. As I stated in the paragraph above, this area was only the entrance to a much bigger park.
Center of the Park:
The main area of Mariner’s Cove Park features basketball courts, tennis, soccer fields, swings, green spaces and much more. I’m not sure if it was the heat or the time of day, or even the day of the week that kept the park empty. I’m a bit surprised even after writing this post. After all its not cramped by any means here. Plenty of space for lots of people.
The only issue I had while visiting this section of the park was a result of personal foolishness. I repeat, don’t go exploring in the middle of the day in Florida Summer. I won’t be making that mistake again. It was brutally hot. I was sweating in the shade. None of the prior statements are hyperbole.
One day I’ll come back here on a less humid and hot day to see if crowds join me. It would be a shame if they don’t. Its a nice quiet park right near lake Monroe and far enough from urban areas to feel uniquely quiet.
The final area of Mariner’s Cove Park is probably where the park got its name from. Its a little cove in a canal specifically to put boats on nearby Lake Monroe. I didn’t get closer because I heard Alligator mating call noises and decided to stay back.
Near the boat launch I saw some signs explaining happenings and rules in the surrounding area for boating and fishing. Maybe one day I’ll get a boat and understand this stuff a bit better. Also nothing says that I can’t showcase entire lakes on this travel blog. New idea?
Pokémon Go:
While I played a bit of Pokémon Go while at Mariner’s Cove Park and even got a picture of Sandile, my reception was pretty terrible. I couldn’t get a proper picture of the park ingame. From what I could see, it was a good park with several Pokestops, especially in the second area. Maybe with better reception and when not so hot out, this would be at least a decent spot to play. But of course there are even better places where reception isn’t as spotty.
It was hot out ands the humidity got to me a little. But it didn’t rob me of excitement. There are a lot of parks in Volusia County and I have never stepped foot in any of them.
