Exploring the World with Pokémon Go: Speer Park
For my next adventure, I visited Speer Park. Google Maps doesn’t have it marked so after finding it earlier, I had to search for it again.
Speer Park is secluded in the middle of a Sanford neighborhood. Like I mentioned above, even Google Maps doesn’t have it marked. But that doesn’t mean there is nothing here. In fact, in this small one block greenspace, there was plenty to look at.
The trees alone demand attention. I’m not sure what species any of them are. I saw a sign talking about orange trees planted here, but since no fruit was growing, I don’t know if anything in the above pictures are those trees. Most likely they are not. But rather than focus on that, I want to instead draw attention to how each tree grew differently from the others. Some drastically so. To me, that created a new scene in every direction.
With two different playgrounds and several benches scattered about, its quite remarkable what this park manages to cram into its small space. Most parks like this one have one major feature at most. Well this secluded park went against the grain. Perhaps those who use the park like that its a well kept secret. But maybe my blog will change that. Its worth checking out.
Its also quite accessible I think. Though there are not sidewalks, the grass is cut low enough for a wheelchair to cross the park. And I know that at least on a couple sides you can park on the street. Its not perfect since at least one side is a busy street with no shoulder, but its better than some others that had little to no accessibility.
Speer Park is a lovely hidden gem in the real world. So how does it measure up in Pokémon Go? Well its a lot better than the last few parks I visited. There is a gym and a Pokestop here. And since both are right next to each other, there are plentiful spawns in that one spot too. Unfortunately, the other three corners are not as game friendly. Didn’t see much pop up over there.
This green space was designed to give some peace and quiet. There isn’t much of a downside in pulling the game up while visiting, but if you are looking for a nearby park for Pokémon Go alone, I would suggest Downtown Sanford instead.
Zoroark snuck into your house and ate your snacks while you read this blog post.
I’m pretty content in this picture. This was a nice little adventure and didn’t take me too far from home either. There are a lot of little parks all near each other and over the next few weeks I intend to visit them all. But I have not forgotten my larger projects either. I’ll be back on the trail soon enough. Look forward to both types of adventure.
