Exploring the World with Pokémon Go: Colonial Overpass

I had a little adventure in downtown Orlando and while there decided to check out the Colonial Overpass.

The Colonial Overpass begins at the Lynx Central Station Sunrail Station. While not anywhere near what I would expect from Chicago’s Union Station, at least Orlando is starting to turn this spot into something resembling a rapid transit hub. In fact, I hope the growth around the train stations and bus stops can slowly turn Orlando into a more accessible city.

There are some fancy looking apartments near this trail. I would love to live in Downtown Orlando. Maybe one day, but by no means can I afford to live here. Goals for the future right?

You can see the Colonial Overpass in the distance. I like these urban environments and the little greenspace that can be snuck in these little corridors Interstate 4 is to my left in the pictures. This is yet another example of a trail I pass by frequently but ignore. Given that I seek these places out, its sad how much of the world is missed.

I noticed that some parts of this trail were still under construction. Or at least being updated. Not too surprising when this entire trail was just recently updated. The nearby overpass is only a few years old in a city filled with plenty of buildings.

Orlando is not Chicago. Not by any stretch of the imagination. But as we start building up instead of out, maybe that dense urban core I like so much will finally form in this little city. And who knows. Maybe this area and the tracks nearby which the Sunrail travels back and forth will help make that transformation reality.

The Bridge:

After a bit of walking I reached the Colonial Overpass in all its glory. For those who live in Orlando, it doesn’t take long to learn about the street below. Known as Florida State Road 50 outside of the city, the street has a reputation here. The crossing between this road and Semoran Boulevard (state Road 436), another road that has appeared in this blog was once one of the most dangerous intersections in the country.

But let’s not focus on that other street. This bridge was built to cross over Colonial Ave and the nearby railroad tracks. Florida has too much water so instead of digging into the ground everything is built up. But I like bridges so that doesn’t bother me.

After going past this bridge so much, it was pretty neat to stand on the Colonial Overpass and just watch cars and trains go by. I’ll be going downtown a bit more. I might come hang at this bridge again soon.

Bridges usually have two ends, sometimes more. And the Colonial Overpass was like most of those other structures. The other end seemed to be a bit more under construction. But I imagine soon enough it will be complete. Perhaps it will connect to the rest of the Orlando Urban Trail. Only time will tell.

Being on foot at places I drive by all the time continues to leave me spellbound. Its such a crazy idea to think about all the places we have been in a car but never on foot. Seriously, take a moment to think about that. You too might crave some adventure.

Pokémon Go:

Colonial Overpass is in downtown Orlando. And like most major cities in the United States, it is a prime spot to play Pokémon Go. While even better parks are not too far away, there is little lost and plenty to gain by playing the game on this little trail. Catch some Pokémon and stand on a bridge while feeling cool the whole time.

I hatched two more eggs and neither interested me. Not only does Yungoos look like a certain person I will not name on my blog, but Azurill doesn’t help much at this stage in the game. I already have several powerful Azumarill for PvP. Well with travel come egg hatches. Every so often I get a good one.

Wrap Up:

I might look tired but don’t be fooled. This was an amazing and productive day. Not only did I set the process to start a publishing company, I got a PO Box too. And of course I had enough time to explore the area nearby. If only I could have this energy all the time.
