Centrum Glacies Session 88: The Whale
Week 88 Dungeons and Dragons Campaign in Centrum Glacies continues with the party clashing with the Whale that had scared them away in a prior encounter. This dangerous creature is a Mythril Ranked threat and even stronger than the Lich they had just recently defeated.
Like my other campaign, I’m turning this one into a book series. You can check out the first one here.
Anyway, just like my other campaign, there is a whole lot going on and I don’t want to elaborate on every moving piece in the story. You can see the whole thing in the book series.
!!!Trigger Warning!!!
This story deals with a cruel world with some horrific twists. So far, this campaign has featured: Animals getting killed, Genocide, lots of body horror, evil cults, brainwashing, torture, psychological warfare, child abuse, slavery.
One of the party members had an eye gouged out and lost an arm. Not exactly the way it happens in Berserk, but that might have been the inspiration for it. The group was incinerated in lava. But rather than die, they were transformed into Demons. They might be free from these transformations for now, but only time will tell what this means for them.
!!!Final Trigger Warning!!!
The party fearing for their lives as well as those frozen by some sort of barrier in Zrin as they clashed against the strange whale. Engelique stayed back due to exhaustion and Obrom stood right beside her. He didn’t have a Demon form to make use of and could not harm the creature.
The Whale had an unusual ability to phase in and out of existence. In addition it was was capable of swimming through solid objects such as buildings. As the party with Persephine and Engelique’s assistance managed to actually harm the creature, it in turn targeted them. Bursting from the ground at one point right under their feet.
Knights of Shadow
But the groups coordinated attacks managed to wound it more than on a minor level. The monster had another trick up its sleeve as it dissolved into shadow. Where the Whale had been moments before, there now stood several armored knights clad in shadow. Each held a massive greatsword crackling with lightning.
In all the chaos that ensued moments later, the group missed many of their attacks and hit each other instead. A good thing indeed that the Knights were not able to capitalize on this advantage. For they too were having trouble hitting their targets.
Unfortunately something was clearly amiss between the attacks. All the Knights vanished simultaneously and left behind dark orbs that crackled with energy no less powerful than those greatswords.
Strange Attack
How dire this was became much more clear when Persephine dropped her stoic persona and demanded that the group destroy these orbs and quickly. The group understood the importance of listening to her advice. After all, she and Engelique had been fighting this monster for an unknown amount of time already.
As the group broke the orbs one by one, it became clear that each one was connected to the Knight that had summoned it. And breaking it dealt an incredible amount of damage to the creature attached to it. A few of them reappeared only to disintegrate moments later.
Jyona came up with an idea to aid them in their task. She cast plane shift on one of the orbs out of curiosity. And her idea bore fruit. Without another attack, the orb vanished and the Knight connected to it appeared only long enough to fade into dust.
Vulnerable Whale
After the party defeated the Knights, the Whale reappeared. And it was vulnerable now. The creature was more corporeal and fell helpless and defenseless before everyone.
Everyone began attacking it as it lay there. Even Obrom’s attacks were capable of harming the Whale as it sat there no putting up any resistance.
Jyona had another crazy thought. And it was an intrusive thought that came from who knew where. She decided against all logic and reason to try and supplex the Whale. It went just as well as the rest of the party expected. Not well at all.
Engelique saw that the Whale was starting to recover. And she and Persephine had fought the Whale for a long time now. She saw an opportunity to defeat it for good. And so, at the risk of harming herself, she used the Law of Time to turn back time for the party. She gave them one final opening to finish the horrifying monster off.
A chance they capitalized on. And her trust was well placed. Between Persephine’s incredible power and the party themselves, the Whale was at long last vanquished. It gave one last horrific otherworldly cry and then faded away to nothingness.
Other Planets
Persephine pulled the party into the Mythril Adventurer’s private pocket dimension. She had something vital and extremely secretive to discuss something about the whale. Even the Platinum Pocket Dimension wasn’t safe.
She stated that it was likely that the Whale itself was from outer space. As in a distant planet orbiting a star far away in the night sky. Though she knew not which one.
She also told the party that she suspected the Orcs were from another world too. They had weapons and technology unlike anything else she had seen. And she had traveled almost the entire world with the currently unconscious Engelique.
To Visit the Feywild
After urging them to keep this a secret from everyone else they encountered, she also mentioned what another of their allies was up to. Gor-Venal was investigating what happened with the Red Cap Fairies. And Persephine proposed that different planes were actually separate planets themselves.
Persephine urged the party to travel to the Feywild and meet up with him to see if her theories were correct. She warned that such an adventure would be comparable to a Platinum Ranked Guild Commission.
She also pointed out that the Elves on the Abyssal Continent guarded the closest stable portal to get to the Feywild. They would need another Elf to convince them to let the party, even as Platinum Adventurers in. And she knew who they should ask, though Trent specially groaned when he heard who. Zinbella was their ticket in. Of that the Witch was certain.
Wrap Up
The Feywild is the land of Fairies and the party has only encountered Red Caps. What else might lie in wait in that place. And what if it truly is a whole planet with its own environments and customs? Not to mention that Trent is not looking forward to running into the Psychic Vampire Druid again after what she put him through.
