Cycle of Millennia 2021 Session 21: Mindflayer Lich
Here is week 21 of my 2021 Dungeons and Dragons Campaign Cycle of Millennia. Lets go over session 21: Mindflayer Lich.
Don’t forget that this campaign has been ongoing for over three years. There is a lot of story to cover and I’m writing a book series to document it all. I am adapting this adventure into a book series. The first three are on Amazon.
!!!Trigger Warnings Abound!!!
This campaign takes place in an incredibly unpleasant setting. The party has dealt with Human Traffickers, Sex Slavery, Child Sacrifice, The Apocalypse, Genocide, Wicked Cults, and other related topics.
There is a God of Madness that is fond of causing auditory and visual hallucinations, makes use of psychic gaslighting, commands the literal legions of hell, and all around causes untold suffering in the setting.
Essentially, nothing is off the table in this campaign. If the above ideas are not ones you want to think about, I do not think this blog series is for you. That is not a problem and does not indicate any failings on your part. I am a storyteller that does not shy away from the darkest topics. It would be horrible for me to not warn my audiences of this in advance.
!!!Final Trigger Warning. Past this point there be dark topics!!!
The party fought Mindlfayer Lich and constantly respawning ghosts. They were as a group afraid to approach their main enemy though. Liches were powerful spell casters. This one had the added abilities to stun and eat their brains if they got caught up in its spells.
Unfortunately, at range was where Liches had the advantage. While the party fought the ghosts, their enemy blasted them with spells while being safe behind multiple cavern walls. And simply defeating the ghosts accomplished nothing since the Mindflayer Lich just summoned more.
The party discussed potentially using the Wish Spell and its unique reality warping properties in different ways to defeat the Lich. Unfortunately even if they managed to cast the spell safely, Rose pointed out that the Lich had plenty of ways to cancel their attempts to defeat it its own Magic.
Inner Darkness:
Velkora came up with a solution. A risky one that no one else knew anything about. She drank an unusual potion and started vomiting. The group knew she was too smart to poison herself, but that didn’t explain what she had done. But they figured it out when a second darker Velkora.
Recently Caic had pushed his inner darkness out so the group understood what was happening. However Velkora exceeded expectations and managed to control her shadow self. And sent it at the Lich.
After defeating Lich, Velkora was forced to fight a shadow self. She had intended for it to get killed in her place. But as it turned out, hitting a Lich a couple times wasn’t good for its body. But if she didn’t defeat it now, the consequences would be severe.
She defeated this shadow self which caused her connection to Orabaras to vanish. Which the Goddess noticed immediately since the group all together was magically pulled out of the cave.
Wrap Up:
Thus far the party has not been in direct opposition to Orabaras Goddess of depravity and control. But that might be changing.
